Renting a car

When booking a rental car online, always make sure that the website you are using is a reliable one.

When collecting the car, remember the following:

  • If you don't understand it, don't sign it. This way you avoid paying for unwanted extra services, extra insurance or refuelling service.
  • Do not sign anything where the price has not been clearly indicated.
  • If you have paid for the rental in advance, present your voucher when collecting the car.
  • Check the car and list all visible damages on the rental form so that you will not be charged for them as new damages.
  • Read the rental agreement carefully. It details the rental period and terms and conditions such as the kilometrage fee. Note that there are differences in terms and conditions between car rental companies.
  • If the car rental is an expensive one, you may be required to present two payment cards as a guarantee when collecting the car.
  • Make sure that you are given copies of the check-out and check-in forms.

Other fees

The car rental company is entitled to charge your card afterwards if, for instance, you have not refuelled the car or if you have been issued a traffic fine while driving the car.

If you have paid for fuel in advance, you do not need to refuel the car before returning it. Note that car rental companies will not refund any deposit paid.

There may be considerable differences in fees between car rental companies, for instance in administrative fees.

If you are late when returning the car, you may be charged an extra day's rent. Car rental services generally run in 24-hour cycles (i.e. if you collect the car at 11.00, you have to return it by 11.00).
