Full authentication

Verified by Visa and MasterCard SecureCode are full authentication services that improve the security of online payments. They were developed by major international card organizations Visa and MasterCard. When a purchase is made, the service verifies both parties of the transaction: the customer and the merchant.

It is recommended that purchases with a Visa card are only made at online stores displaying the Verified by Visa logo and purchases with a MasterCard are made at online stores displaying the MasterCard SecureCode logo. These logos confirm that the merchant is participating in the service through their bank.

When making a payment, you are asked to identify yourself using your online banking IDs or a separate ID issued to you by your bank. The identification details are not disclosed to the merchant. The merchant simply receives an authorisation of sale showing that identification was successful.

How the services work

  1. Make your purchases and go to the checkout.
  2. Choose Visa or MasterCard.
  3. Enter your card number, the card expiry date and the CVV2/CVC2 code on the reverse side of the card
  4. Click ‘Pay’. You will be transferred to your online banking service.
  5. Accept the purchases using your online banking IDs or a separate ID issued by your bank.
  6. You will receive confirmation of successful payment.
  7. Returning to the merchant’s site, you will receive a confirmation of your order.

This service may be used with Visa Debit, Visa Credit, Visa Electron, MasterCard Debit and MasterCard Credit cards. Ask your bank if your card is automatically included or should be separately linked to the service.

Note that some banks require a full authentication to be used every time you shop online.
